Field Trips 

The SocCon Committee have arranged a number of great field trips, please scroll down to see details of the itinerary and cost involved for each of these field trip options.  

All four Field Trips will take place in the Afternoon of Tuesday 5th of October, departing St Andrew's College at 1.30pm and returning at 5pm. Participants will all be transported to and from the field trips. Once all participants arrive there will be a short talk discussing shared histories. Then participants will head off on their various walks/activity around the CBD.

The organising committee reserves the right to cancel a trip at any time, offering a full refund (of the field trip fee only) or offering the participant the opportunity to change to another available trip.

Waka on Avon


Date: Tuesday 5 October 2021
Cost: $30/person 

A journey down the Avon River to discover the legacy of  Māori and early Settler interaction. Learn and hear the stories of Christchurch’s history and its early landmarks that have shaped the city's destiny.

Mana whenua CBD walking tour

Leader: Ngāi Tahu
Date: Tuesday 5 October 20210
Cost: $10/person

Led by an expert from Ngāi Tūāhuriri, participants will walk and explore the values, traditions and customs of the area. Participants will learn about the cultural narrative of Ngāi Tahu, the mana whenua of Ōtautahi. The walk will focus around the Ōtakaro/Avon river, but also move into other areas of the CBD. 


Colonial Heritage CBD walking Tour 


Date: Tuesday 5 October 2021
Cost: $10/person 

Led by local historians, participants will explore Ōtautahi's colonial history. The walk will focus in and around the CBD and visit various areas that are linked to Ōtautahi's colonial past. 


Earthquake Re-build walking tour

Leader: Ōtakaro
Date: Tuesday 5 October 2021
Cost: $10/person

Led by Ōtakaro, the government agency in charge of the main anchor projects, participants will walk around Ōtautahi's CBD. They will explore the various new anchor projects and learn all about the re-build post 2011.
